Liverpool FC

Barely 48 hours after my post warning of the perils in football  due to inflated wage bills and ridiculous transfer fee's than one of the most famous clubs in world football announce they may not be able to continue as a functioning unit next season. And this on the back of their best finish since the 2001 season. That may seem like scaremongering but it is a real possibility Liverpool the dominant side in domestic and European football through the late sixties through to the eighties find that that may indeed be WALKING ALONE unless a buyer is found urgently. The American duo Gillet and Hicks have overstretched themselves. it is possible that new financial arrangements can be put in place without a buyer but that will just be sticking a plaster over a broken leg. if Liverpool were to have a bad season ie not qualify for champions league or exit domestic cups in the early stages then the loss of revenue would have an immediate impact. So many other factors can have an influence on their future.Hypothetically  the swine flu that recently threatened this country could have resulted in league fixtures being delayed  indefinitely. Had it taken hold then Liverpool as well as  other clubs could have ended up like our financial institutions Begging for help. But unlike in the case of the banks the cavalry would not appear over the hill in the guise of  government. The debt is so tightly serviced that even short term drop in revenue is catastrophic for many clubs. And the bigger the club the  more stringent the conditions attached to that debt. lets hope that Liverpool ride out this storm and this serves as a wake up call to all football clubs before the monster that is the premier league ends up devouring itself. its only been a week since the season finished and I miss football terribly and I am sure I'm not alone in feeling like this. How would we feel if it never restarted. incidentally a report published yesterday by the FA  claimed that football had bucked the current financial crisis and had in fact shown a 27% increase in profits on the previous year. Go figure.

Kung fu

One of my favourite programmes when I was a kid was Kung fu starring David carradine by today's standards it was quite poor but back in the 70's it was a top programme with its popular catchphrase "grasshopper"  David carradine playing the monk with a heart of gold travelling the west righting wrongs guided by wisdom from his teacher brilliantly. but today another warm memory has been snatched away with the revelation that the actor who by the way is now 72 has been found dead hanging naked in a closet performing a sex act on himself whilst his oxygen was being cut of by a rope attached to his neck and penis. I wonder what his teacher would have made of that.

Power of the press

It looks like my article backed by my massive following of 4 has  persuaded Kaka to think again about Chelsea and it looks like he may not come after all. Without blowing my own trumpet I take full credit for saving football as we know it in this country and possibly the world. excuse me while I put my arm up my back and pat myself there on a job well done. More power to the press.

Gordon is a moron

Now that his cabinet is falling apart and his backbenchers are turning on him I predict with a degree of confidence that Gordon Brown will not last till the end of June. if I were to stick my neck out even more I could even say he will be gone with in a week. that's how pathetic and spineless our "leadership" have become. like rats deserting a sinking ship it appears its every rat for himself as a malicious anonymous email does the rounds in parliament. Under party rules 71 names are needed to force a leadership challenge sources indicate as many as 80 will come forward. so as the song goes ...altogether now Gordon is a moron....

Drive by robbery

What is this government playing at as if they don't have enough problems. Now they are antagonising motorists with  rises at the pumps. petrol has reached £1 a litre in places. 6 months ago crude oil was $147 a barrel and we paid a pound a litre now with crude oil at $68 a barrel how can a pound be justified. I suspect its speculators in the city gambling on the price of oil. how are we supposed to come out of recession. if we are spending extra money at the pumps for the same amount of product. this gives us less to spend in the high street.

Bin Laden - the has been

Predictably an audio tape released yesterday had the usual threats of death and destruction toward the great Satan America. This time the terrorist outrage was aimed at Obama for backing the Pakistani governments activities in the Swat valley.  dangerously close from Bin Laden's point of view to the North West frontier on the border with Afghanistan where he is believed to be hiding . Unlike previous tapes (note its audio and not video) this one contains  nothing new in fact it sounded  a bit tame from supposedly the worlds top terrorist. terrorists by their very nature are supposed to terrify unfortunately  for Bin Laden he has been out of circulation for so long that he has become a bit of a toothless tiger.  Driven like our friend Saddam to hiding in a hole in the ground for the past 8 years. This containment of Bin Laden is a single edged sword while it is true that it has rendered him for the most part impotent in launching any large scale attacks. it also means that his death or capture would  apart from a morale boosting effect on the west have no real strategic significance. Al Quaeda the organisation would largely be unaffected. This deliberate policy from the White house of Marginalising Bin Laden has been a spectacular success. Many observers believed Al Quaeda could not be defeated in Iraq but they have well and truly been routed. Afghanistan is a much harder nut to crack but the signs are good. the only part of the world Al Quaeda has any real foothold in now is in North Africa.

Did football die today?

It appears that Chelsea have bid in excess of seventy million pounds for Kaka. This deal cannot be allowed to go through. Where will it end is there a final number will it stop at eighty will it go to a hundred and how can a club recoup that kind of outlay without hitting the fans pockets. I Heard a caller on the radio say today reference that transfer. and I quote " LDV vans is on the brink of bankruptcy 5000 jobs are on the line 30 million pounds will safeguard that company and those jobs" unquote. is that not obscene. incidentally Kaka has been offered if reports are true ten million pounds a year AFTER TAX. not so long ago banks and financial institutions started to get out of control with lending with no checks made on them and look where they today. is football to go the same way. is this the day that football died?
