Gordon Brown today said he was "mortified" after spelling the name of a fallen soldier incorrectly in a letter of condolence but pledged to continue writing the messages himself.
Far be it for me to defend the Prime Minister but in this instance the criticism is not justified and way over the top, yes he did make a mistake with the spelling of the lads name and also there appeared to be spelling mistakes, but it is widely acknowledged that Brown has terrible eyesight, he is blind in one eye, and he has notoriously bad handwriting.
People should perhaps look at the fact that he does write a handwritten note to the family of every fallen serviceman and I am sure his sentiments are heartfelt, lets find things to attack him about lets not look for sticks to beat him with where none exist.
He has personally apologised to the family, lets let the matter rest now, some critics have called for him to resign and as appealing as that sounds this is not a resigning matter.
Good shout. I think the outrage about the original letter was maybe justified - however, it was blown out of proportion. Indeed, the latest revelations and the secretly recorded telephone call from Gordon Brown is well over the top - and most likely instigated by the Sun newspaper.
ReplyDeleteCome on now, surely the fact that he phoned to personally apologise should have been enough, now they are pointing out that he 'ummed' and 'arghd' alot during the chat.
If you transcribed your own phone converstaions, once on paper it too would be full of umms and arrs, and 'know what I mean' and Yeah yeah' etc.
T dont like Brown - but for heavens sake he's half blind - and we're slating him for poor handwriting. One 'commentator' noted that because of this his not fit for office. Hold on - now I will be outraged - are they saying that if your an intellectual heavyweight - but with a disability you should stay at home like a good little disabled person and not run for high power jobs? We all now hundreds of perfectly able people with zero disabilities who are prats.
How would I have reacted to such a letter? I'd demand an apology, and when I got it would settle the matter. Period.
