Paul McCartney Miser

The skinflint ex Beatle Paul McCartney has pleaded for investors to bail out Abbey Road studios who have been put up for sale to help struggling EMI with their debts.

Seeing as how  latest rich list estimates put the notoriously tight Beatle at 825 million pounds, you would imagine he could put his hand in his own pocket.

Tight Git.

  1. Why attack Paul? The blame here should go to EMI, which is set to sell off a piece of the nation's heritage to the highest bidder because of its own financial mismanagement. Why aren't you (or anyone else for that matter) pressuring EMI to DONATE this building to the National Trust?

Second, your estimate of Paul's wealth is way off. The latest figure shows he's worth about 400 million pounds (that's according to the divorce settlement and according to the Times latest rich list). Much of that is tied up in his company, which actually provides employment to people in Britain. How many jobs are you providing?

I love how everyone is willing to offer up someone else's money to save this "national treasure" but you sure as heck wouldn't put up of any of your own. Yes, Paul should make a significant contribution, but then you'll just accuse him of being an egomaniac and preserving his own legacy.

  2. Easy there Tiger, why are you geeting so worked up, I didnt realise he had only had 400 million left, maybe I should organise a whip round to help him make ends meet, EMI has earned millions for your mate Paul over the years, why doesnt he buy Abbey Road and donate it to the National Trust himself. its easy for you to say "then he will be accused of being and egomaiac" How conveniently that helps him avoid putting his hand in his pocket. McCartney has always been "careful " with his money even his kids moan about how tight he was as they grew up. So take a chill pill, I am entitled to an opinion.

  3. Of course you are entitled to your opinion. But you should have your facts straight. 400 million is a whole lot less than 825 million. And as I mentioned, much of that money is tied up in his company.

I object to your knee-jerk attack that Paul should somehow be the ONLY one to pony up to preserve Abbey Road. Every musician who recorded there, and the many fans who enjoyed the music, should contribute to the best of their ability. If this is a national treasure, it should be nationally supported.

And again, I would add, why are you attacking EMI? Why aren't you pressuring that company to donate this national landmark? Something tells me it's just a lot easier to take potshots at Paul.

  4. If I'm honest I dont like McCartney, my dislike of him goes back to when John Lennon was murdered, if you recall when he was asked live on the news how he felt about what had happened, I believe it was the same day he remarked flippantly, "its a drag isnt it".
I lost any respect I had for him then, but his legendary meanness coupled with the fact that he is in the press today asking for someone else to step in and save Abbey Road, is the reason I wrote about him, why did he not just keep his mouth shut and not raise the issue in the first place.

  5. I watch that same clip and I see a person who is in shock, who doesn't want to be answering these questions, and who wants out of there. I see someone who is covering his emotions. I know many people (especially men) who are like that.

Legendary meanness? He's notoriously kind to fans, he's stepped in repeatedly to pay health bills for ailing friends, and he's widely known as a good father. The man has his faults (plenty of them, and don't we all?) but meanness isn't one of them.

And he was asked about Abbey Road by the BBC. He didn't raise the issue; he was asked. I hope he does contribute a couple million to saving Abbey Road and I think he will. My point is that: He shouldn't be the only one paying this bill. And its EMI who should be pressured to either donate the property to the National Trust or sell Abbey Road at a fair price (the 30 million figure is ridiculous). But this shouldn't be Paul's problem alone.
